High on a hilltop on the eastern shore of the Hudson River (just South of the Rip Van Winkle Bridge) is Olana, the home of 19th century landscape artist Frederick Church. The house boasts a unique archictecture, a combination of Calvert Vaux's design and Church's own interpretation of the Moorish style he fell in love with on his trips through the Mideast. It is sited with a 360 degree view of the Hudson Valley, most spectacularly over the River toward the Catskills to the West. In fact, each window is planned as carefully as a landscape painting, and a tour of the house reveals Church's artistry at every one.
In addition, the house contains original furnishings and decor, including many of Church's paintings.
Admission to the house is by guided tour only - Wednesday thru Sunday - seasonally, but the grounds are open everyday 8 a.m. to sunset. You can drive in and stroll around the 250 acre landscape admiring the views. The Carriage-house orientation center offers film and exhibits. Admission is charged - call 518-828-0135 for more information.
